2011: The Cello Sings
(FAMOUS ARRANGEMENTS AND ORIGINAL COMPOSITIONS)
Dear Friends,
It is with great pleasure and anticipation that I invite you to the forthcoming International Cello Festival at Towson University, April 10-17. Spring is a time for transformation and rebirth. Just as the caterpillar emerges as a beautiful butterfly, enjoy a refreshing look at old musical favorites in their beautiful new form for cello and piano. Usher in a beautiful musical Spring with this “triple crown” of concerts – a musical and soulful getaway without leaving town.
·My lifelong friendship with French pianist Anton Gryzik has resulted in his beautiful arrangements of Richard Wagner’s Prelude and Liebestod from Tristan und Isolde, Franz Liszt’s Die Lorelei, and Johannes Brahms’ Violin Sonata No. 2 for our performances. The music took on a very personal meaning as Anton painstakingly worked on extracting the beautiful, wrenching harmonies out of Wagner’s orchestral score while battling for his life with cancer. According to Anton, friendship and beautiful music gives him strength and hope to continue fighting. Our performance in Paris last October was recorded for French television and acknowledged with a standing ovation. We will be delighted to chat with you at the reception after the concert.
[Sunday, April 10, 7:30 p.m.]
·Frances Borowsky was so inspired by a friend’s performance of Francis Poulenc’s Clarinet Sonata that she vowed to make her own cello arrangement of this work. The result is a “cello sonata” so difficult that she might well remain the only performer of it! Frances will team up with her sister, Elizabeth, to form a duo that transcends youthful energy and charm. Also on the program: Polish cellist and Towson alumna Aneta Otreba returns to take on the devilishly difficult cello arrangement of Cesar Franck’s Violin Sonata. Aneta recently received her D.M.A. from the University of Maryland, and by the time of this recital (!), will be a mother of two! Her partner at the piano is Towson’s celebrated and beloved pianist, Reynaldo Reyes.
[Thursday, April 14, 7:30 p.m.]
·If you missed German cellist Alexander Hülshoff’scello recital at Towson two years ago, here’s a second chance to hear this wonderful cellist in his electrifying collaboration with pianist Andrew Harley. Warhorse sonatas by Brahms and Debussy will be flanked by arrangements of the Leonard Bernstein Clarinet Sonata and Johannes Brahms’ Hungarian Dances.
[Sunday, April 17, 7:30 p.m.]
See you soon!
Sincerely,
Cecylia Barczyk
